Then HEAVILY,

Heavy Stuff

I normally like to share fun things related to paint and faux and have begun to share how-to videos, etc.

Today however, I am proud to share something of a more serious nature. The news of the Penn St. sexual abuse victims has been eating me up. I normally do not follow sensationalized news stories closely and do not feed off of the media frenzie. In this instance, I can't seem to let it go. My wife commented recently that I seemed irritable when I returned from a business trip. I realized tat it was because I had been reading news articles and transcripts on my Black Berry.

I feel for the victims, the university, the community and the alumni.... What to do?

Positive Energy:

Today through a work friend, I learned about an organization (www.proudtobeapennstater.com) started by a few alumni who are working to raise money for RAINN.org.

She is a Penn St. Alumni a graphic designer was involved with the football program during her time at the university. She yearned for a way to help and emailed them a preliminary logo design suggesting they sell t-shirts to raise more money. Her design is one of six chosen out of more than 200 entries. They are accepting votes to chose the final winner through Friday, Nov. 18^th at 3:00 PM EST.

The winning t-shirt design will be printed by the thousands and sold to support this incredibly worthy cause.

RAINN will use the funds raised for prevention efforts and to help victims through the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, which is a popular resource for younger victims who are feel more comfortable seeking help online. Since #ProudPSUforRAINN launched 2 days ago, RAINN has seen a 38% increase in the number of victims using the Online Hotline. RAINN’s hotline director, Jennifer Marsh, said, “We’re seeing an outpouring of people reaching out for help — women and men, boys and girls — many of whom have been encouraged to get help for the first time as a result of this tragedy.”

Leslie's incredible talent is quietly evident in all of her interiors. (This is NOT the Attack of the Sponge or a how-to book with page after page of over-the-top Faux!)

I had the pleasure of getting to speak with Leslie on a recent phone interview. She was busy running from client meeting to jobsite, but took the tme to talk. As we spoke, I realized that we had a lot in common related to how we approached interiors and working with interior designers and clients. Leslie, said that her decorative finishes, "Showcase the architecture and design and hopefully provide a warm, wonderful feeling for my clients."

Leslie, has worked hard over the years to hand pick and train her painters how to replicate her designs. She has a small army of artists and highly trained and coached, talented painters. Hard work and customer care along with her amazing sense of design is keeping her business booming in a tough economy. She is ALL ABOUT Customer Service. She keeps her opinions to herself and focuses on the vision of the client. (Every so often she has to gently guide a client away from disaster)

Speaking with Leslie was a treat and I hope to be able to work with her in the future on upcoming projects with Faux Impressions.

It explores the darkest indigo to faded-jeans hues, some with violet undertones, as well as the calm, shimmery shades that reflect rivers, lakes and seas.” Some fantastic examples of blues are the royal wedding, Netherlands floating apartment complex, Richard Ginori china, and of course the planet earth!

According to the Sherwin-Williams website, “Casting aside the more innocent yellow-tinged greens of the past, this eclectic palette focuses on greens that are lush, moody and complex. It showcases the depths of the sea and forest; leafy motifs; rustic natural textures; and organic elements such as algae, moss and seaweed.” Some fantastic example of greens are algae, an Amsterdam Boutique Hotel, “Land Carpet”, and a Kartell Victoria Ghost Chair by Philippe Starck.

According to the Sherwin-Williams website, ” Red is the color of love, fire and the earth’s molten core, and it stirs raw emotions ranging from the deepest passion to the softest femininity. This saturated palette includes hues of brilliant flowers and glowing embers. It isn’t a single red, but a deep gradation of fuchsias, red-oranges, violets and delicate pinks.” Some fantastic examples of reds are a Marion Rose piece of Art, a red gerber daisy, red/pink boutique room, and red lipstick.

Segreto: Secrets to Finishing Beautiful Interiors.

Proper Metallic Roller Application

Metallics Roller Applied:

It is important to fully seal new drywall with one of Sherwin-Williams premium latex primers. apply 2 coats of the specified base paint in ProMar 200 ZERO VOPC eggshell paint or Duration home Matte paint. Allow to fully dry.

Next apply a generous application of Faux Impressions, Metallic using a 6" x 1/2" microfiber mini roller sleeve and a 9" x 9/16" microfiber roller sleeve. Use the mini roller to get into ceiling, baseboards lines and corners. Pull out of the corners in random curving motions. (Random curving "X's") As you get away from the corners you can switch to the 9" roller frame and handle and continue with the random roll application, blending and working across and down the wall.

Always maintain a wet edge and "Go HJeavy or Go Home!" in your application. (300 sq ft to a gallon) One person or a team can roll the product on regularly as long as another person or team comes behind and backrolls using the mini and 9" microfiber rollers, fully loaded, breaking up the "straight up-and-down rolled" pattern with the random motions. Again, do NOT backroll with a dry roller. This type of "wet" and generous application allows for the metallic to flow and level and "melt" to the nearly sprayed appearance.

Spraying:

You can spray through and airless or an air assist unit as long as you take the filters out of the hose and the gun and use a fine finishing tip and approx 2000 psi.

The Faux Impressions Metallic is about as durable as semi gloss paint. For additional durability, apply a coat of Sher-Clear 1K semi gloss water based poly.

For custom Metallic colors, contact your local Sherwin-Williams delaer. They will be able to mix your custom color using a 20% paint formula. Simply paint the wall your chosen color and apply the 20% tinted metallic. Create a sample board for final visual effect prior to paint a wall or room.

343 Dresses: The Chromatic Convergence Project by Mary Younakof

343 Dresses: The Chromatic Convergence Project is an interactive art piece that uses color to explore and engage the sprawling Los Angeles metropolis.

Central to this project is a dress design that the artist has created and made into 343 separate dresses, each having a different color. The project is based on the number seven: the dress itself is comprised of seven pieces and the color palette ...is based upon seven colors; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (ROYGBIV).

From the looks of what I saw on Facebook Mave Alft and the attendees at the Faux Retreat did some amazing things with Quartz Stone. (See pictures below!)

I received a Facebook Message from Mave a month or so ago and the fun began. She kind reached out a grabbed my attention with the fantastic opportunity to have our products participate in such a creative endeavor. (She has a habit of reach out and getting peoples' attention. See below)

Retreat to Wisconsin!

When I heard that the retreat was in Wisconsin, I was quite jealous that i could not rearrange my schedule to attend. Wisonsin in late August is beautiful.

IDAL Convention THE Place to Be!

IDAL Convention:

The IDAL Convention was a huge success! (Attendance UP over 50%!)

Congratulations to Linda Banning outgoing president of IDAL and Julie Stonehouse, current President of IDAL!!! The energy, abilities and focus of the attendees, teachers and vendors kept the convention BUZZING along nonstop!

See Pat Ganino creator of the Faux Forum and editor of Artisphere online magazine and friends in the photo below painting a mural in the exhibit hall.

In between meetings and classes and set up and happy hour and late gab sessions to early class starts, all of the attendees were in a continual state of motion.

Faux Effects had a very fun and interactive art puzzle that attendees were contributing to while at the Expo. Every where you looked, something was going on.

With all of our social media communications and friends, it was really fun to see people meeting for the first time. I could have sent a crew around to film Regina Garay of Fauxology with her many meet and greets... "Oh you're Regina, great to finally meet you. Love your site!..."

The Lobby was also abuzz!

While all of the activity was happening in classes and the Expo, there was also the painting of the philanthropic mural going on in the Convention hall lobby. Kate Cahill and team knocked it out during the busy 3 days and made their noon Saturday deadline.

Personal Challenge:

This Convention meant a lot to me personnaly as I was going to be put on the IDAL Board of Directors and I was going to teach a class. Both very serious commitments and when you think of the cailber of the membership and organization a bit of a daunting task! As we are all busy and over committed, it was challenging for me to "get er done" in time for show opening. In a perfect world, I would have completed everything in time to ship it from my studio in Chicago to Hampton, Virginia...

Driving South:

I completed all Expo display boards for the Sherwin-Williams booth and finalized the boards for my class. then it was time to pack up the Pro Dryer Box, drying racks, paint, plasters, tools, prepared sample boards, large display boards and a suitcase or 2. (Also my new travel Mix CD from my daughter) Kathy Carroll was driving the same route a day later with her full load.

Class set up:

I lucked out and was able to set up my room a day in advance! Couldn't have accomplished all that we did in 2 half days without the Dryer box! (upperright corner in photo below)

Board Meeting, Not bored!

Before classes started, I had the pleasure of sitiing in on my first Board of Directors meeting and got to know my fellow board members well through a productive day long meeting and dinner. We all work well together and I expect that we will continue to ramp up our efforts to achieve our goals this year. My main work portfolio is Membership, so let me know how we can better serve and grow our numbers!

The Annual Board Meeting was exciting and we all got to enjoy a great keynote address from Pierre Finkelstein. Tremendous man!

To Bed Early:

Events and meetings ended at 11:00 PM and then the late night gab sessions began. I had an early class to teach so it was off to bed "early!" (I was called a light weight by many, but I had some HEAVY lifting to do the following morning)

Teaching my first class at IDAL was a nerve wrecking experience for me. I felt a sincere level of responsibility to all who signed up for my class and for the organization at large. I wanted my students to get what they had hoped for and more! I also, knew that these students would be inspirational and talented and hoped for a communal spirit. (Earlier to bed but tossing and turning!)

The IDAL staff was there at 6:30AM, ready to go and they welcomed me in and unlocked my classroom. Thankfully that first half day, my students and I, (our class family) unlocked a lot of possibilities!!! We had a tremendous group effort to teach and learn together.

After the first 4 hours, I could wait for the 2nd day to start. I spent the afternoon, preparing and basecoating "extra credit" boards.

Day 2:

My group was very talented and we needed time and space for some "free play" and exprimentation. We focused on Metallics, crackle, metallic plasters and Venetian. Take a look at the results...

Inspired by ColorMix 2012
My classmates inspired me and have me carving out more studio time to work on what they shared.

The original color and trend inspiration for the finishes that I presented at the Convention were inspired by the newly released ColorMix 2012.

The original soft launch of ColorMix 2012 was in Chicago in June at NeoCon. Our full blown presentation begin this week as part of Las Vegas Design Week. Look for a presentation coming near you.

Neocon in Chicago Preview

Neocon, "quickie preview" (More next week)

I took a train to downtown Chicago from my HOUSE, not a rental car from a hotel room...(Wierd?)

I got to the Merchandise Mart early and made it up the elevators about an hour before the massive crowds attacked the buidling and exhibits. I got some Great photography, which I will feature in next week's blog. I do have a quickie preview of our ColorMix 2012 launch, as well as a photo of a painter trying desperately to finish a display wall less than an hour before "curtains UP!"

Visual Palette Awards in NYC!

Those of you who have begun to follow me on Twitter found out last Wednesday night that Felicia Arago of Unfauxgettable Finishes won the VPA Award and the iPad2.

West Coat to East Coast AGAIN!!
This past week I spent a couple of great days working with architects, designers and installers in San Diego, then slept on 2 planes heading over night to NYC for the

1st Annual VPA's (Visual Palette Awards)

hosted by Sherwin-Williams Metro New York.

I think that it is no surprise that the Metro New York and New Jersey area has a huge number of super talented decorative artists and a nice pool of high end clientele. I have had the luxury and luck of getting to meet and work with a ton of great artists in the New York market this pas year.I have seen a lot of their amazing work. You have seen some of it in my posts.

This contest was the brainchild of Sherwin-williams rep extraordinaire, Bob Hendricks. You can reach Bob at swrep4488@sherwin.com. Bob is pictured below in front of some of the finalists' projects photos.

Bob put a lot of work into this concept and was rewarded with some amazing submittals and a huge turnout at the St. Johns University campus for the event. from 2:00 PM - 6:30 PM several hundred attendees came through the exhibit of entrees and all voted on their favorite.project.

Big Party!:

During this busy open house, paint expo I conducted a 2.5 hour class for approx 90 painters and artists where we discussed the various nuances of the Faux Impressions Metallics, Quartz Stone and Venetian Plaster. Everyone left with a good understanding of the capabilities of the line and their own hand done samples of Venetian Plaster and Quartz Stone. Some of the artists brought in their portfolios and we worked to match their Venetian Plaster techniques using our innovative "Fast to the Wall, Easy to Burnish and Color Accurate Formulation!"

Interior Designers "In the House!":

The previous week, I was in NYC presenting to a large group of designers at the famed D and D Building. (What a place and what a great group of interior designers!!) They were very engaging and had a lot of tough quesions regarding our metallics and Venetian

Plaster. We actually had a few of the more "hands-on" focused designers show up to the class at the VPA's. some sent their painters. We appreciate the sincerity of interest in learning the building blocks of Decoratrive finishes. We all know what great things happen when and interior designer and decoratrive artist work together!!

I was excited to have a special guest in attendance. Omar Robinson, head instructor at the DC9, Union apprentice program in Long Island was in attendance. Omat brought a couple of sample of our Quartz Stone in a deep saturated red with an embossed stencil. Omar was kind enough to share with the group. See below: Thanks Omar!

Speaking of Red... After the VPA's the Bulls were playing in the Eastern Conference finals.I missed it due to a customer engagement that evening. The previous Sunday night however, while I flew to San Diego the Bulls took apart the Heat in a decisive win. Since then it has been a tough time for Bulls fans back home..I tried to further help the cause this Tuesday by again flying on a plane during the game, but my efforts fell short. The big 3 are tough. Go Bulls!

The great part about my job is meeting and seeing the work of artists all over the country. One of the runners up last week was Debbie Viola. http://www.debbieviola.com/ Take a look at her beautiful, sophisticated design below. She combined textural layers of Venetian Plaster, with inlays of metallics and blended layers of Quartz Stone. The results were spectacular and simulated real aged stone.

Next time I am in town Debbie will have to teach us that one!

After the events of the season and an evening meeting, i headed to Miami for Hands-on sessions. Busy and Productive Week! At my hotel the recptionist asked if he could do anything else for me. I pointed to my Bulls hat and asked him to have the Heat lose a few more games. He declined to assist.

Next Week look for a Full Feature on the Hotel Showcase in Tulsa and an exciting look at V'uz Resturant in Salt Lake City. Just when i thought that i couldn't be further blown away it happened. all thanks to Mohsen Asgari, master artist and designer, pictured below:

The innovative and expert use of Venetian Plasters, Metallic Plasters, Metallics and design at this new Salt Lake City hot spot are truly inspirational.

Tulsa 2011 Designer Showcase

Coast to Coast and then West to Oklahoma:

This past week, I travelled from Los Angeles to New York City and met with some very talented painters in LA and some top interior designers in NYC. Just as my week of travel was beginning to tire me out,. I headed to Tulsa Oklahoma and spent a mind blowing day at a Sherwin-Williams sponsored Designer Showcase. My exhaustion was replaced by inspiration and excitement. I will give you a quick teaser and plan to do an entire feature story on this 30+ room showcase in my June article for Artisphere online.

The Showhouse was at the site of a rennovated, historic boutique hotel found on Rt. 66 in Tulsa. Take a look at the picture below at the original walls and the original "Fantasy Faux Finish" from 1928. Pretty cool stuff done during Prohibition...

NYC Always Exciting

D and D Building

This Past week I spent time with a group of interiors designers at the D and D building in NYC. My presentation focused on our new line and their was a lot of good Q & A and back and forth discussion regarding our new Venetian Plaster.

REPLAY, from Last Fall:
I always expect to be surprised and impressed by the artists and contractors that I meet in my travels, but a recent trip to NYC tops my list of "WOW" moments! A few weeks ago in Long Island City, I trained some 2nd year apprentices on how to apply our new Venetian Plaster and Metallic Plasters. The instructor was shocked at the ease with which the product could be applied to the wall and was particularly shocked with the ease of burnishing. He said "We have had every company in here over the years and this is the BEST Venetian Plaster that I have ever seen!" His comments were great to hear, but the invitation that I received to come back ASAP was even better. The local Sherwin-Williams commercial sales team needed me back the following week to meet with the largest commercial contractor in NYC who was installing 23 floors of high polished Venetian! A date was set for a Times Square morning meeting...

Like any good tourist, I got to Times Square early to have a Starbucks and soaked up the vibe. I then arrived early to the building to meet the contractor and field rep. As I stood there, I was shocked at the vast numbers of "Beautiful People!" (I mean all shapes, sizes,genders, ages, etc, decked out and looking spectacular!) I wondered if all people in Manhattan looked this good while hurrying to work. I was feeling under dressed and a little out classed.

Long Island to Indy:

This past week, I had meetings and training in NY and was headed to a presentation at the Indian Design Center and a visit to CertaPro Indianapolis. I got in after midnight the night before my morning presentation to interior designers at the Indian Design Center. The following morning, as my Starbucks was beginning to wear off, I was looking for a little jolt of inspiration. I soon found some as I drove into the Art and Design district of Carmel, Indiana. (pronounced like the candy) The entire area has art studios and sculpture and is a beautiful little oasis just outside Indianapolis.

After I got my laptop all synced up with the design center's projector and faux samples set in order on the easel, I had 15 minutes to kill, so I went for a quick walk around the design center looking for new ideas and inspirations. I lucked into it by immediately entering Outr'e, a family owned business with a showroom that features custom made cabinetry and locally hand upholstered furniture.

Eric Reynolds, the showroom manager and family member , showed me around and explained the process of a digitally printed silk fabric that caught my eye. He said that they have an entire line offered, but also do a lot of custom printing on silk and other fabrics for designers. It is hard to see in the photo below, but there is a varied stria printed over the silk and paterns printed in accent colors. The fabric has a metallic, layered sheen and is quietly "alive."

Eric, explained that if I wanted to see more of these fabrics, that he would take me to the studio/ showroom next door to meet Walter Knabe the artist and designer of these fabrics. I had 10 minutes left until my presentation and wait til you see what i got to fit into those 10 minutes!!!

I was introduced to Walter and had the pleasure of getting a tour of his studio and getting to know him a little better. since then I have done my homework and understand better that i was in the presence of greatness.

This wonderfully engaging artist, classically trained through Masters degree, landed his first big job in NYC with Andy Warhol. He has done work for Michael Jordan, Richard Gere, The White House, museums and palaces in London and Paris, he has several renowned public installations and several lines of fabrics, wallcovering and licensed art on handbags and even Hallmark cards. His digital art, combined with screen printing and painting is breath taking to see in person. On the quick video tour below, you will hear him mention that a lot of his custom work is through interior designers.

Well after that extraordinary visit, I ran over to present to the interior designers and decorative artists in attendance. We had a great session with a lot of conversations, Q & A and networking. Afterwards, local artists and contractors were exchanging cards with some of the interior designers.

It was an inspiration to see a company work so hard to train its installers. However, their best-in-class showroom displayed and conveyed their capabilities to a level that I have never seen before anywhere else. Upon a quick visit, any consumer, designer, or property manager can easily see and better understand, what it takes to provide a quality paint installation and space transformation. President Matt Rolfsen and Maryann have set the bar very high in the Midwest!

This is the first annual VPA challenge! The VPA's will be an annual award that will recognize outstanding concepts and execution in Interior Design,Decorative Finishing and Residential/Commercial Painting. The winning entry will be decided by the attendees to the event. There will be 1 vote per attendee and the winner will be decided by the most votes. The event will be held in conjunction with the Sherwin Williams "Color the City Paint and Design Show". All participants must be present to win.

Participants must reside or do business within the tri-state region.

Interior Designers:
1.Submit 1 8x10 before and 1 8x10 after photo of project.
2.Submit 1 design board with name attached.
3.Provide Place and Date of project.
4.Provide receipts from Sherwin Williams for all paint and wallcoverings purchased for project. Only Sherwin Williams paint and wall coverings products can be used in the completion of the project. If there are any questionable entries it is up to the discretion of event organizers to either accept or reject entry.
5.Include a letter of intent with business name,individual designers,products and color palette used on project.

Decorative Artists:
1.Submit 1 8x10 before and 1 8x10 after photo of project.
2.Submit 1 12x12 sample board for each finish with name attached
3.Provide Place and Date of project.
4.Provide receipts from Sherwin Williams for all Decorative Paint. All products used must be exclusivley from Sherwin Williams Faux Impressions Line.If there are any questionable entries it is up to the discretion of event organizers to either accept or reject entry.
5.Include a letter of intent with business name,individual artists,products and color palette used on project.

Painting Catagory:
1.Submit 1 8x10 before and 1 8x10 after photo of project.
2.Submit 1 design board with name attached
3.Provide Place and Date of project.
4.Provide receipts from Sherwin Williams for all paint and primers purchased for project. Only Sherwin Williams paint and primersproducts can be used in the completion of the project. New IDAL Chapter informational and strategy meeting:

Paramus, Here I Come. Heading to Louisville, Los Angeles early this week and will end up in at the Paramus Store for our Kiick Off meeting for a new IDAL Chapter in New Jersey. I have had the pleasure of meeting with and seeing the extensive skill set of the artisans in the area and look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday at 6:00 PM.

Everyone will leave our wine and cheese party with a Venetian Plaster sample and a chance to win prizes.

Faux Impressions Metallics:
For now, I needed to include a quick video of proper installation of
SW, Faux Impressions Metallics.

"Go Heavy or Go Home!
Please random roll with a 9/16" microfiber roller or 3/4" Colossus roller sleeve, backrolling in random curving "X's" with a fully saturated roller. (Not the 5/16", too thin) Mop it on, random roll and backroll and let then it level and flow. For corners use a 1/2" x 6" microfiber, mini roller sleeve.

The color and opacity is driven by the paint color beneath, so be certain to have full coverage of your paint basecoat before applying the metallic topcoat.

1 coat will provide a beautiful slightly transparent, nearly sprayed appearance with roller application.

A second coat of metallic will provide full opacity, enhanced shimmer and a completely sprayed appearance with roller application.

While in Seattle doing hands-on sessions and meeting with some seriously talented professionals, i had the luxurious experience of visiting one of the finest Paint/Faux Finish studios in the country at L C Jergens.

It just kept getting better... Climbing the stairs to the 2nd floor main showroom and my eyes and mind were treated to a large quantity of some of the most impressive designs that I have ever seen. Tim Jergens and his extraordinary company are the elite of the eilte!

Coast to Coast:

I was flying around avoiding the snow the last couple of weeks ending up in San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore and San Diego.

(My family is still speaking to me, even though I missed 30" in 24 hours!>?:"!)
